Vulnerable Children

Providing education and nurturing support to vulnerable children

The mission of the Vulnerable Children program is to facilitate the care of children orphaned or living in extreme poverty through providing basic necessities, educational opportunities, adequate nutrition, and healthcare. Through our partners and donors, thousands of children each year are given opportunities for success as an adult. Each additional year of school increases adult earnings by about 10 per cent and for each additional year of schooling completed, on average, by young adults, poverty rates fell by 9 percent.

For most children, parents are their first line of protection; orphans and vulnerable children are deprived of this security. Children without the guidance and protection of their primary caregivers are often more vulnerable and at risk of becoming victims of violence, exploitation, trafficking, discrimination or other abuses (UNICEF).

According to UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children report June 28, 2016, based on current trends, 69 million children under five will die from mostly preventable causes, 167 million children will live in poverty, and 750 million will be married with children by 2030, unless the world focuses more on the plight of its most disadvantaged children.

“Denying hundreds of millions of children a fair chance in life does more than threaten their futures – by fueling intergenerational cycles of disadvantage, it imperils the future of their societies,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “We have a choice: Invest in these children now or allow our world to become still more unequal and divided.”

Village Volunteers partners with NGOs who run schools, shelters, and homes serving vulnerable populations. Children are assisted with needs that facilitate an education like tuition for school, books, and uniforms. Children receive what they need in health care and nutrition to support their goals to grow as a productive member of society.

Accomplishments: Since our founding in 2003, through our program partners, we have assisted thousands of vulnerable children with care and support.
